Yo Peeps & Homes!!! It's Nick! Well... My idea for a video is to show how having abortions isn't right. It sounds weird for a guy to say this but Im being completely honest. I have been thinking about what could have happened if that certain child wasn't aborted... What could have happened? The video will have a person who became president and changed the entire U. S. then later changed the world but didn't because his mother had an abortion on him/her. Then the video will have someone else who saved thousands from dying but didn't because he/she was aborted. I want to talk more about it but i don't feel like it... Just Kidding!!! I would like to tell more about it in person! Thanks for reading!!!

Blogging assignment 4 + some pictures
Hi videomakers!
I really enjoyed reading your blog entries! I hope you guys are having fun with this. The trick is not to treat this as a 'homework' but as a really cool space where you can share your ideas with the world. Thanks to all of you for doing this! We have to throw a party when we get to our 100th blog entry :)
Also, the sound recording session was excellent yesterday. I hope you guys had fun.
Here are a couple of pictures from our recording session:

Your blogging assignment for week 4 is to write about a movie idea that you may have. For example, some people have suggested videos on Haiti, teenage pregnancy, a comedy about applying for jobs... you guys know by now that we're interested in videos with meaningful messages, but as long as you satisfy this, your videos can be about anything. Write a bit about what kind of video this would be (is it a PSA, a documentary, a fictional narrative, a news reportage)...
Also, I noticed that noone has yet imported any pictures to the blog -- so let's have everyone include 1 picture with their blog that is relevant to the video you would like to make. Maybe you could write why this picture inspires you to make the video (just a suggestion)... We'll be vlogging (video-blogging) next week...

Haiti
Well i think that Haiti is going to go down on history. I think that people should help with what they can, like give out 5 to 20 if possible because they are the ones suffering and even a dallar or 2 may make a difference. I think it would a good idea if we did make a video on Haiti, what people think of it, what do they think we should do to make it better, and show how this can make a difference. It would be a good idea if we include how would we feel if we were in there shoes. Thats why this would be a great PSA to do.-Raul Cervantes

daft punk
i was in 3rd grade when i meet this guy who was a buly to me i didnt like him and he never liked me his cousin came to the school in th 4th grade i was in deep drouble at the end of that year he went to another class and so did i i never say him until the 8th grade he had still hate me and him had promblems i some times made him laught but he mostly didnt he just didnt like me i had pople defend me but i dested to act tuff and wanted to fight him he keep on slaping me and punching me i told the teacher he got crazy mad and dected to kill me but some people in the class decited to defend me and pulled him back i just stanted there i wanted to fight him but i just never did and i am glad becues i didnt hit him but he hit me and got in trouble so never laying a hand on him is a good thing but if u fight you will get in trouble
i've heard many things about haiti, good and bad, but i lean more towards the bad side. I am a bit mad or (since i'm allowed to expess my feelings) pissed off at the somewhat ignorence of people. Out of all the people that say, " i feel bad for all the people that died here" only a few actually mean it. I know people that either lost someone there or that know people who lost family or friends there. They feel true sorrow towards their loved ones while some people say it just to look good. Then again we lost many people in new Orleans and people eventually (too soon) lost interest in that. the same thing happened, people lost loved ones and people suggested they cared. Not to be cold hearted but why are we helping another country when we can't help ourselves. we still have not repaired much in New Orleans. In order to help others we must help ourselves. we can help by just watching the citizens of haiti and "stepping in" if we need to. if we care too much haiti too, will be a forgotten story just like hurricane katrina.

Sadi-freedom
the lady for the presentation was talking about haiti, black american history, and how women had no rights.
she said that slavery has never been abolished. that people are still treated racist today. people treat others a certain way just because of their skin color and what backgrounds they come from. people also have less chances of obtaining a goal because of a background. we should make a video about this because it is something that happens everyday and people do nothing to stop this from happening.

follow up on Haiti
i think that people should be more concerened on haiti because the whole thing has kind of faded away. people do not realize that it will take like about ten years to repair haiti.it is intense damage. about 10000 people died!!!imagine if 69% of chicago's population died out of the blue. yeah thats what happened to haiti

I think that we should do it on Haiti because many people did not know where or who was Haiti before the earthquake they don’t know that Haiti was poor even before the natural disaster so by teaching and telling others history on Haiti will not only educate them but make the also value what the have and see that there is other that are worst. This can be done in a type of documentary that will tell the goods and the bad times of Haiti and how they live compare to how we live. jose sanchez

MY neighborhood
My neighborhood was not been very bad over the years but, there has has been violence. When i was little i thought my neighborhood was real safe. I would like to go out by myself and thinking nothing bad would happen to me. As i got older i started seeing my neighborhood very differently. I started seeing horrible things like people getting robbed.
I remember a old lady getting robbed at the corner store by y house. I also started seeing a lot of gang activity. I would sometimes be scared to walk alone at times because i often made contact with gang bangers. I think neighborhood is not that bad today. The violence was calmed a bit.

HAITI
Haiti is going to take a long to recover from this disaster because they got a earthquake that was 7.0 and it destroyed everything in Haiti for example there house, apartment, cars, hospital, police station and don't forget the airlines and so on. that i thing is going to take around 30 years to fixed it up the way it was and you got hungry people and people that are dead and rotting, and you got no water it going, to take a long time to recover and it going to read allot of money over billions dollars that how much is going to take. that why former president Clinton and George bush are trying to get people allot of people to donate to Haiti and help them out. It our responsibilities to help them out even if you give them $1 that good at least it will get them 2 bottle of water to keep them at least alive and its our job to see what they need because they are not animals they are the same thing as we. we are all humans and equal and we should help each other not fight and stick together because who know what is going to happen to us in the future,. that why we should help them out if they need something like water, food, and clothes. who knows we might need there help in the future that why we should all be friend all country.

Haiti
Haiti its sad to see what has happened in that place lots of people that died that horrible day. Many people in there surrounded by death family members looking for there love ones many of them will never get to see them again. Many people taking advantage of the money we send over there. Many country's help while others just watch if only we the world could just combined forces to help those in need. And if all the country's help out imagine Haiti back in shape and if we get to accomplish this goal just maybe we the people will see that no matter what country you where born in as long as the whole world is back to gather we can accomplish any thing. So please help out Haiti help the people that are in need by helping them just maybe we can finally bring peace to Haiti. Jesus Ayala
Haiti
Not a lot of people acknowledge the fact that Haiti's disaster was a huge one. I've seen it passed off as "Just another earthquake" by others, not realizing that the people that died was someones mother, father, brother or sister. Well, In reality, it's always the crap closest to home that hits you the hardest... I have to admit, I even disregarded this at first as another earthquake, but realizing the extent of this, I took it seriously.
Anyway, we should support Haiti, but support shouldn't be America's first priority. America itself has enough problems to be worried about other countries. Health care should be among the top in America's priority list, not *coughs* stealing other countries oil supply *coughs* I mean restoring peace back to their land.
So ladies and gents be sure to TXT: "HAITI" to 90999

Haiti
In my own opinion i would like to best make a PSA about us talking about Haiti. We should show respect in any form of way possible and show that we care for what happened. What we can do or at least try to do to show them we care and we would like to help out those people who have dealed a great amount of suffering this year. People from Haiti lost family, friends, and others close to them, and we all know how much that must hurt them. Maybe some of us could talk about how if possible if we have lost anyone close to us and how that affected us, to show that we understand their pain and we ould like to help them out.
Some people don't even value what life they have. We only have one life so we shoudl live it and enjoy it to the fullest we can, and yet some people are just to stupid to realize that and they let it go to waste but not valueing it and seeing the beauty of it. Some just let it go to waste by ruining their lives with bad mistakes that will hurt and affect their future greatly, such as doing drugs and joining gangs, which are two big examples that are the biggest reasons why people, mainly teens these days, will end up with a bad future if they chose to follow that path. With what has happened although with the earthquake in Haiti, it might have at least impacted a few people to realize how easily life can be taken away just as it is given, how quick it can just come and go and you can't even see it coming becasue you never know when it could happen. In my opinion, I would say the poeple who have gone through what has occured in Haiti value the gift of life and treasure it mroe than any of us becasue of what occured, and we should understand how they must feel. At least try to speak in the PSA how we feel about what happened, personal experiencces on losging people close to us and how its affected us, what we can do to help, etc.

Violence (Assignment 2)
This is going to be a relatively short story about a violence act witnessed by me.
This happened during my 7th Grade year at a undisclosed location.
The events begin during summer of 07; I was outside my house sitting in the front porch with one of my cousins. Seemed like a normal day because the air smelled fresh, the birds sang loud and the rats roamed wild (haha). I used to live in front of my elementary school during this time; the school had a large field where students or community members played football or soccer most of the time. At the moment there there were two girls that I knew that lived down the block from me, they were in the field talking to some guy. Seemed like the guy that was talking to them was trying to hit on them. All of a sudden, I see this black car run down the street and suddenly stop. Someone from that car got out and ran towards a firehydrant and quickly (somehow) unscrewed the cap off and ran towards the girls and the guy. The guy with the firehydrant cap ran towards the guy with the chicks and smashed the cap on the side of his head and made a run for it in the car. The guy that got hit instantly fell on the ground as quick as a stone, which at a first glance It seemed funny yet scary. I ran towards the school field to see if the guy was alright, his only responce was a couple of mumbles and a couple of weak kicks to the ground. A lot of people ran towards the guy to see if he was alright. Suprisingly the ambulance arrived pretty damn quick. Blood was the only remnant afterwards in the field...
My thoughts:
Just a bunch of morons thinking they're cool by going around whacking eachother in the head, this is the kind of crap that makes a community get a bad rep. I later found out this was gang related. Thank god these guys are taking care of themselves...

Neighborhood violence
Like i said in my last blog, my neighborhood was violent but eventually it got better throughout the years. i didn't remember what bad things happened outside because my brother would take care of me and my sisters. in my house i witnessed some violence. my brother and my dad would fight over stuff but i can't remember what. i remember a story my brothers told me a long time ago. they told me that one of them were chased and "jumped" for a jacket which was worth about $100 or so if i remember. i feel safe now but i'm extremely cautious now thanks to the incident that happened last fall.

Prisons & Freedom ( Gesenia x] )
On of the Topics That Angela Davis Was Talking about was the prisons & african Americans and our freedom.
We Should talk about how were all suppose to be treated as equal but in reality were not. Sometimes People from bad neighborhoods do bad deeds like steal or something because they see no other choice in that moment. Growing up in bad areas , who would you look up to ? What if your parents are the ones who actually taught you to do this? Do yu have choice? Its Like a continuous cycle!
They do this to get their basic needs. The government just puts all of us in jail. Why do we see more african americans in jail then anyother race? Thats Because of the reason i just gave you. Nobody is Never Actually Free or has freedom.I Think we should do a video on the prisons and we should interview African americans that came out of jail and what they think about the Topic. We Should find out like court cases and other information. It Should begin we us talking about african american rights, then end with like people doin protests.

The gang violence
I don't really have any interest in the gangs and their problems but they are always getting other people into it. in my neighborhood people are scared to walk down the block when its night and even during the day because a lot of gangs are always walking around with a bunch of people in a group. I've experienced gang violence because of my uncle. he got shot more than one time because of the gangs. there's not a lot of people who we can trust these days. people change either from good to bad or bad to good. sometimes my friends are scared just to drop me of on my block because the gangs don't care who you are, and they would jump you or do something to hurt you. i think the violence because if the gangs should stop and put an end to all the problems they are causing in this world. the violence that we been through is non sense and everyone should feel safe when walking by their neighborhood even if their walking in groups because gangs will have the wrong thought about everyone. the time that i think most gangs come out and are walking around, everywhere, is during the summer because that's when they can go out and have their fun. i think violence is not good for any of us to have to deal with. Raul Cervantes
Gangs,
In my neighborhood i had experience, meaning I've seen, a gang fight across my street. i didn't know what to do so i just decided to let them deal with their own problems by themselves. in my opinion i think the whole thing about gangs is just a waste of time its all about the no lives people. they just have to cut their actions and be responsible for their actions. if children see the violence that is happening now, they are going to think that its okay to fight because everyone else is doing it. also they would think that joining a gang is going to make them popular like the gang members. there has been a lot of fights here at Schurz and I've seen some of them and they are usually all about the gangs. they hurt each other for some reason and they do it over and over again. fights can get worst each day if there is no stop to this. gangs are harmful to other people because people think that they are not living in a safe and protected neighborhood. children are scared just to walk down or up the block at night because of the gangs. i think everyone is scared of the gangs because they are eligible to do what they want even when they don't even care whats going to happen afterwards. in my neighborhood, the gangs aren't around as much as before but i think they would be around during the summer. i think the gangs will never end their violence. -Crystal U.
Haiti
In my opinion, i think that the worst thing that had happened this year was the earthquake in Haiti. Many people have suffered because of what had happened. I didn't get to go to the University Of Illinois and missed most of the days because of personal things but i can still want to write and show my respect on what had happened in Haiti. There's been a lot of deaths occurring to the earthquake. Many people lost their family & friends. I think we should show some respect on Haiti and record some shots of the news about Haiti, how it looks right now, and have some students say their own opinions. A lot of students have something to say about this tragedy and i think that Haiti is the most interesting fact that has happened this year and it's kind of important for us to show respect to one another even though we don't know them. I think life isn't what you really think but you just gotta make a fortune out of it and live your life. So i think we can make a PSA about Haiti and having some students tell us their opinions on what happened and show some footage about what happened in Haiti. _Crystal U.
Blogging assignment 3
Hi everyone,
Great job on the blogs so far! This gives us a lot of material to work with.
Your blogging assignment for week 3 is to write a short treatment for a video on a topic of your choice related to Angela Davis' speech you saw at UIC, or related to the topics we discussed in class. 'Treatment" is a piece of writing that describes the film - kind of like a summary... Treatments are useful when you want to let other people know about your movie idea, to get them excited about it so they can help you make the film (what we call "pitching your idea"). Choose any topic we discussed, then write two paragraphs and come up with a title for your video. Some of the topics we talked about are: earthquake in Haiti, Haitian revolution, womens' rights, Civil Rights Movement, prison system reform, Black Panther Party, Frederick Douglass etc).
Why are you interested in this topic? Why is it relevant to young people? Why would this story make a great video?... Feel free to do some research online (this often helps if you get stuck - just don't plagiarize anybody's text or ideas). What kind of video is this going to be: a documentary? a news show? a fictional narrative? a PSA (public service announcement)? Who is the director? Who's the camera operator? Who are the actors (if any). Are you planning to interview somebody? Describe briefly the story and the images we are going to see in the video. How does the video begin? How does it end?

Nancy:
i think that everyone should be helping haiti.why? well think of all of those poor people suffering over there right now.imagine if you were in their shoes.you would be just waiting on someone else to help you out .dont pretend you wouldnt because those poor people have lost it all.EVERYTHING!!!so be that person and help them out right now...before its too late.

Unknow
I knew I should of ran away. Feeling all those punches against my body, leaving bruises behind is a good way to explain your promises. I was fool with your dirty mind. Feeling betrayed wasn't a good sign. Asking myself every night what did i do wrong just makes me want to commit suicide. The strong love that i had, that I would never have again was erase. For the most part what hurts the most is your abandoned, that I will never see you again, your still here but for me your dead. Remembering your forgiveness, I just cant, what you did to me is too deep, is like being lost in the forest. Walking thru the dead leafs are your lies of "you love me". The red apple up in the tree, remembers me of what my heart use to be.
I Believe,
That there is somethings in
life dat i cant let got of.
Like the way you left me.
How you did not care how u hurt me.
I Believe
That there is something that
Called love.
But not in my world...
All there is,
DARK SKYS!
I Believe
When i bleed then
on the white roses of
Of the non-violent.
When i walk i see light.
But darkness shadow over me....
When i live to see the next day the
next life i find out that im the me!

VIOLENCE
when i was a kid almost 7 years old i seen a lot of things more then any one else seen when there were kids. I was 7 years old living in my country Palestine. It was 2000 and the war begun again. It wasn't the first time my country fight in war. It always been in my country and the Jews always fighting for there homelands. So it was the year 2000 and I lived in a village near the west bank and the Jews would always shoot bullet at night and go around people house to scare them. I was a kid and with my other brothers. my mom used to sleep next to us in one bedroom with all six of us and stay there until they stop shooting for protection. Every night you see in the sky bullets flying all over our houses because when they shoot at the sky in the dark outside you see like red lightings flying and brighting the sky because the bullet goes so fast that you see red things. That's why i grew up with violence and have seen different kinds of guns, weapons in the news and reality. i grew up with violence but i hope that young people these days would know better and become a better person if they see something wrong you should walk away instead of fighting. I hope that there parents will teach them right from wrong like my parents have thought me. For my protection my parents brought me here to the U.S. to have a better future for me and my brothers. Now i lived in a good neighborhood that treats me and my family with respect. Now my younger brothers will live in a better neighborhood then I used to live and they will not be exposed to that much of violence that i have went threw.

what i think about gang N violence
not a lot of action happens in my block its a nice block everyone has respect for each other but there is some kids that r trying to be what they claim to be "gangstas" but for me there all a bunch of poser's with no LIFE sure some of them r just in it to look cool or for some is just to get protection. but like i said my block is nice and clean.I also believe that violence is never going to be stop we humanity grow up with violence and as much as we try we wont be able to stop it. sure we could stop some people but we have more kids ready to take there place. i have a Lil quote to say for this "An other lost soul is lost in Earth" by Jesus Ayala and no i did not copy n paste
gang activities
Not much gang activities occur around my nieghboorhood, although a couple blocks away from mine there used to occur a lot by that area. The reason for that was becasue i knew this one guy who was in a gang. I used to be friends with him and the first time i ever went to his house was the last time i went over. The reason for that was because as soon as we walked in three guys in his house pretty much cornered me by a wall asking me questions like if i was in a gang, do i represent any gangs in any way, and other stuff. My friend had to come and get me out of them and told them i was nothing, just a friend and after a while had passed more members of that gang came to his house and they were doing drugs and other stuff.
They even wanted me to join their gang because they said i apparently looked like one of their gang members but i refused becasue i didn't and still don't ever wanna get involved with gangs becasue thats like automatically messing up your future and its someting that is realy hard to get out of. I remember one day as well when my parents picked me up from school so i got a ride home, but on the way to my house we always pass by his house and that day when we passed by his house there was like at least 30 people outside in the front of his house, all wearing the same color pants and shirts. It was pretty scary to see that many gang members there. Around my block i would always hear from neighboors that they heard or saw adults, teenagers, get beating up horribly in many ways. I knew they ment that one guy I used to know and his gang members, becasue i knew all the stuff they did cuz he would tell me and want me to do it with them, but I didn't wannabe involved with it and later on just lost contact with him becasue i wanted to avoid him becasue i knew the more i hung out with them the worse it could get for me.

VIOLENCE
Violence isn't what you think it is,
violence is anything.
Violence is a hurricane,
violence can come any time or day.
Violence can come any stat or way.
Violence is somthing that doesn't really have a name.
Violence is every where.
Violence is the way things happen.
It isn't always someone shooting.
But it can be the anything,
from the way a owl is hooting,
to the way a cartoon is made.
This is VIOLENCE.
Not always good not always bad.
But it something you don't want to be forced in.
Violence doesn,t have just one face.
It's every where so watch all and see all.

Street Violence ( Geseniaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa) x]
My neighborhood is just another neighborhood infested by gang violence.
Graffiti marks all over garages and apartment walls.
Young Men posted up at the street corner.
Gangs are all around us, and their violence keeps getting stronger.
Sadly I've Seen these happen Before my eyes.
I was at a house party with some of my cousins,
when two rival gangs began to fight.
It was complete chaos, broken glass bottles,
people screaming and yelling to find a place to hide.
Everything became a blur and I suddenly looked at my arm which was covered with somebody else's blood.
That day numerous innocent teenagers were injured.
Which Makes me think on how we can't even walk through our neighborhood without being safe, much less even go to a party. Gangs have caused so many issues to our society.
You can't even mix certain colors with your outfit , because they're gang related. In school we can't even wear shoes that have two different colors!
Gangs Are all around us ,and In my opinion are growing stronger by the day.
The gang situation has gotten out of hand and no one seems to do anything.
Without this type of violence we could give our future children a safer enviorment, where they could wear what ever they want, and walk the streets without hassle.

sadi-gangs
i have lived around gangs all my life.
i don't know much about any of it.
but what i do know are the basics and what gangs do.
i would always see stuff about gangs on the news.
an example is: somebody got shot in a drive-by.
gangs are all over the news, nowadays and at least one person gets shot or killed everyday.
On Last Halloween when me and my sisters were out getting candy and messing around, when we were on our block we heard a gun shot.
when we heard it we ran to the house.
on our way we saw a group of guys all hop into a car
soon after it was on the news.
the news said it was two blocks away and a someone had shot a pregnant woman.

Violence at my neighborhood
By my neighborhood there is a lot of violence.
As far as i remember there had always been violence by all the neighborhoods i've lived in.
i've seen people die in front of me.
Once there were gang members in the corner of my house.
It was in the summer and it was late at night.
I was outside coming from my sister's house...
when all of a sudden they started shooting
&& i was in the middle of that.
My parents didn't know i was out of the house
because they had left to work.
Till this day my parents still don't know that they could've lost their only child
just because she decided to go out when their parents told her not to leave the house.
Last year on halloween me and my sister went trick-or-treating and egg bombing.
it was 10p.m and me and my sister decided to go to a bad neighborhood to go to her boyfriend's house
and go to my boyfriends house.
Thank god nothing happened to us but my mom told me that they were shooting by the house.
my mom went looking for us that night and when she found me she started screaming at me
and she was actually about to hit me.... she didn't though.
The reason why she was really scared was because she thought that something could've happened to me that day
but if only she knew that i was in a neighborhood where something could've really happened to me.
Ever since that day on halloween she wouldn't even let me out again.

gang violence
In my neighborhood there is many violence which cause deaths among young children and adults. what can we do to stop gang violence? Many people have experience the death of some one special. I have seen violence that many have gotten shot because they may think that they were part of a gang or were mistaken as a member of a gang. I know this person that got shot just because he was walking in the wrong place and wrong time. I wish people would get alone and just think for a minutes what they are doing do people that don't have the fault. I just hope that they would act with a positive attitude but not a negative one. Why killed innocent people? Why get rid of people that have a life to experience? just think and you would know how it feels to lose someone special.

Violence at my Neighborhood
nancy: In my neighborhood I have seen a couple acts of violence. I remember one very clearly. It was last year.I was outside playing with my family and friends.I got tired so I went inside. When I got back out there was callous. Everyone was screaming, talking, walking, gasping and asking questions.I asked my sister what had happened. She informed me that a van had passed by and that they shoot at a house. Two young males got shot. I gasped ans asked why would anyone do such a thing. In the midst of the conversations the cops came. They blocked the street . I still remember seeing the blood on the pavement; I hope that its one more thing I don't have to go through again.

Violence
Since I can remember there has been violence in my neiborhood. There are sometimes gang fights by my old elementry school at night and then someone ends up badly hurt. There was once someone shot in the back of my house. I heard the shot but didnt think it would have come from a gun. The next thing I knew there were police and ambulances outside. The person got shot in the arm and recovered but they never found the person that shot him. Another person was shot a block away from my house close to kilbourn park. I didnt see or hear the person geting shot since i wasnt at home but as I got home from a friends house I saw the police and the do not cross tape around the whole block.I found later that someone again got shot and was in the hospital.
Other forms of violence around my home are sometimes people would jump other people at night at steal there belongings. Thats why my neiborhood is quite and empty because people are scared to go out after dark.Sometimes people break other peoples cars windows and for no reason. People even set other peoples trash cans on fire and it happened in the back of my house. No one was hurt

I haven't seen any deaths or guns yet but i have seen brutal fights. I was at Navy Pier watching the fireworks on july 4th and there was a fight between two guys and it started before the firework show started. One of the guys bumped into the other guy then the next thing you know, they are throwing fists. It was a terrible sight and feeling especially when you are with your family.
I have also been told that someone was shot in my neighborhood in a park called Kilborn Park. My friends mom saw the whole thing. There was a guy walking with his friends minding their own business, then a car full of people pull up on the sidewalk and get out of the car. Then the those guys from the car shoot one of them and kills him, then they drive off. My friend told me that the guy was holding his friend who was dying in his arms and in tears. And... Yeah...

Blogging assignment 2
Hello video producers,
As you all know, one of the things we will be doing in the upcoming weeks is to work with 'flip cameras' to produce a series of short videos on violence for the Cure Violence project www.cureviolence.com. This is a collaborative project between artist Lincoln Schatz, Chicago's anti-violence organization CeaseFire and Community TV Network (and many other organizations and individuals in the city).
In preparation for this assignment, you will need to write about your experience with violence: Have you witnessed or heard about any acts of violence in your neighborhood? How did you feel when you witnessed/heard about this? What can young people do to help cure violence in our communities? What's a good way to stay out of trouble? Write a paragraph or a short story about your experience with violence on our blog...
The due date is Monday, February 15th at 10pm.
Also -- just as a reminder, we are going on a fieldtrip to the University of Illinois at Chicago on Wednesday, so make sure to turn in the field trip permission slips to Ms. Rak no later than Tuesday. Have a wonderful long weekend!

Then I moved to Chicago when I was about 7 years old. We moved since after 9/11 almost everyone lost there job including my mom and dad. Since then I have lived here in chicago with my family.
My family and I do the same things any other Americans do. We celebrate Christmas and 4th of july. We go to church on sundays and then go to the park to play some in door soccer. During the week days my family only sees each other at dinner since everyone is busy during the day. On saturdays when everyone has money we go shopping and then go out for dinner. When the sunday comes we do evrything we did last week again.

All my life i have lived in the same neighborhood in Chicago. I always thought my neighborhood was bad when i was little. There was many violence and not to mention a gang banger living across the street from me. I would say i heard a couple shootings at night and seen this one crime right in front of my eyes. I remember seeing this one lady walking down the street and this guy pops out of know were and just pushed her. He ran like hell and took her bag with him. As i got older it got safe.
My parents are from Mexico and they wished to have a better life here. My parents have kept some traditions. We all eat certain meals at certain times. There is a special tradition when a girl turns 15 years old. This tradition is called quinceanera. My mom did it to my sister a long time ago. My parents have said that Chicago has changed a lot. There are more people from different ethnicities now more then ever. Racism has calmed down a little too, they would say.

Neighborhood
Option 2:
I've never spent more than 5 years in the same neighborhood, due to the fact of my family's ever changing financial status. We were never needy, needless to say there had to be a starting point for my parents but thanks to my them who never quit, even in the snowiest days or the coldest, the job was always done. My parent's originally come from Mexico, they both met here in Chicago while working at some factory. I am the first of the offspring they had, for about 8 years or so, I was considered a "only child". Now, I have a ten year old and a 7 month old brother.
I have seen my share of horrors on different neighborhoods, lets just say the homicidal maniacs running around killing people weren't in short supply. Gangs were a real problem on the places where I used to live until 4 years ago when we move where we are today. I can safely say that I have lived the ghetto life, but later dropped the act as I matured. So basically I lived this horror for about 11 years or so. But like everyone else, we got a chance for change and bloody hell we took it. We now live in a very quiet neighborhood, we may not have the best neighbors but.. beats the hell outta having gangsters running around your block.
As I grew up, my family's traditions drastically changed and I thank them for it. My family used to be the extremely conservative. That is until I started growing up and saw things from a logical perspective. My parents had disapproved at first because they didn't want to be seen as nontraditional around my aunts and uncles. But I rebelled and eventually got them on my side. My father was the one who carried on the actual process of change and our family slowly separated ourselves from "the crowd" which consisted of a bunch of ghetto cousins and drunken uncles and a bunch of hypocritical aunts. I thank my father and mother for this drastic change they went through to provide the best environment for their future offspring.

A little bit about myself
Well I would like to start of with my name, I am Hugo Sanchez and I am 17 yrs old. I'm from Chicago, Illinios, its a great city; the neighborhood I live in as actually pretty calm and the people that live around us are also hispanic so we get along with our neighbors. I been living in my neighborhood ever since i was 4 yrs old, so its pretty much my whole life. I enjoy Chicago for many reasons, but i believe that one of them would be because of the music here, and Chicago is known for blues music. I recently been getting into blues and i think its a great type of music and i'm going to study a few blues lessons to try to improve my skills on the guitar and expand in music styles of playing guitar, because i currently play rock and a lilttle spanish.
My interest of instruments and their sounds always caught my attention and how fun it looked playing it, and my inspiration to try to become a musician came from my father and his brothers, who also plays a few instruments. My father, as well as my mother, both are from Mexico and immagrated to the U.S. to give my younger siblings and myself a better life than what they had and i trully thank them tremendously for that. We (my brothers, sister, and I) follow a couple traditions that my parents had to follow when they were in Mexico, for example, we must go to church for an hour every sunday, we have to follow certain family rules, and one that my father has started for us is continuing to enjoy all types of music out there and reach for any opportunity we have to learn how to play an instrument, and i have been doing exactly that. So far, i'm learning how to play the piano, the bass guitar, the flute, but my main interest is the guitar, i simply love that instrument! I try to improve my skills on the guitar the most and hope to become a guitar teacher in the future, as long as i have a career having to involve music it would be great, but I have side careers planned as well just in case if i happen to change my mind later on, but music would still be a great thing to deal with because it can be heard, expressed, played, and so much more in many different ways! Well i've said quiet a bit about myself already, hope you enjoyed this small brief introduction of myself, hope it wasn't to bad, but thank you for taking the time to read this, hope you enjoyed it!

I believe in life
I believe that with every rainy day there is a sunny one
i believe life is full of twists and turns
and that nothing can be undone
I believe that everyone creates their future
and may lead to their own demise
I believe in friendship
That it will always last
I believe true friends will help you through anything
No matter what happens
because you cannot walk this world alone
I believe in luck
I believe that you can win the lotto
that there's a surprise in every box
I also believe that everything happens for a reason
and it was meant to be
I believe everyone has bad days
and when nothing is right and everything is wrong
we need to stand strong
no matter how long
I believe in peace
I believe that fights dont solve anything
that the only solution is to look everything over
and stop the fight just as it started
I believe revenge is useless
and that words do hurt people
i believe in dreams and goals
they can make your life worthwhile
that dreams give your life meaning
they make life more bearable
I believe that with every rainy day there is a sunny one
i believe life is full of twists and turns
and that nothing can be undone
I believe that everyone creates their future

neighborhood
Option 2:
I've been in my neighborhood my entire life and i have been in the same house all my life. My parents were originally from mexico but my dad eventually came to the us, my mom came after my dad. Eventually they came to chicago and stayed here since somewhere around the seventies. I've asked my brothers of how this neighborhood was before i was born, they told me alot of bad things that happened here. It's once in a blue moon that you see something like violence happen in my neighborhood.
One time in the fall of 2009, someone was shot at the end of my block. i wasn't scared because i was exposed to violence at a young age. I felt more excited than scared because it was cool that someone was shot at MY block. i know that is a stupid opinion but i think its cool. there are some customs my parents do that they did in mexico such as in chrismas going to church (even though i don't). this neighborhood changed from bad to good in the past 30 years. my family, and myself, have changed in almost every way.

I Believe..
I believe-
that we don't have to change friends
if we understand that friends change.
I believe-
that no matter how good a friend is,
they're going to hurt you every
once in a while and you must forgive
them for that.
I believe-
that true friendship continues to grow,
even over the longest distance.
Same goes for true love.
I believe-
that you can do something in an instant
that will give you heartache for life.
I believe-
that it's taking me a long time
to become the person I want to be.
I believe-
that you should always leave loved ones
with loving words. It may be the last
time you see them.
I believe-
that you can keep going
long after you can't.
I believe-
that we are responsible for what we do,
no matter how we feel.
I believe-
that either you control your attitude
or it controls you.
I believe-
that regardless of how hot and
steamy a relationship is at first,
the passion fades and there had
better be something else to take
its place.
I believe-
that heroes are the people
who do what has to be done
when it needs to be done,
regardless of the consequences.
I believe-
that money is a lousy way of keeping score.
I believe-
that my best friend and I can do anything
or nothing and have the best time.
I believe-
that sometimes the people you expect
to kick you when you're down,
will be the ones to help you get back up.
I believe-
that sometimes when I'm angry
I have the right to be angry,
but that doesn't give me
the right to be cruel.
I believe-
that just because someone doesn't love
you the way you want them to doesn't
mean they don't love you with all they have.
I believe-
that maturity has more to do with
what types of experiences you've had
and what you've learned from them
and less to do with how many
birthdays you've celebrated.
I believe-
that it isn't always enough to be
forgiven by others. Sometimes you
have to learn to forgive yourself.
I believe-
that no matter how bad your heart is broken
the world doesn't stop for your grief.
I believe-
that our background and circumstances
may have influenced who we are,
but we are responsible for who we become.
I believe-
that just because two people argue,
it doesn't mean they don't love each other
And just because they don't argue,
it doesn't mean they do.
I believe-
that you shouldn't be so eager to find out a
secret. It could change your life forever.
I believe-
that two people can look at the exact
same thing and see something totally.
different.
I believe-
that your life can be changed in a matter of
hours by people who don't even know you.
I believe-
that even when you think you have no more
to give, when a friend cries out to you
you will find the strength to help.
I believe-
that credentials on the wall
do not make you a decent human being.
I believe-
that the people you care about most in life
are taken from you too soon.

Paragraph
like most of my friends I was born and raised here in Chicago. However both my parents were not born in the United States. They were born in Mexico and they came here to try to have a better life. I have 3 brothers and no sisters. All of my family is really into soccer. However, my parents and brothers go for a team called America and im the only one that go's for a different team and that team turns out to be Americas worst rival which is Chivas. My neighborhood is ok but its better over the summer because me and my brothers get to play soccer with the rest of the kids on our neighborhood to see what team is the best from our neighborhood. So far we are the champs. In our neighborhood there's not alot of gangs but yet more people are moving in, specially gangbangers. So, im happy having my family specially my little dog Cody.

I Believe;
I believe in life.
I believe everything in life has its own purpose.
I believe everything happens for a reason.
I believe in music, art and humanity.
I believe in love.
I believe in lust.
I believe everything that comes among us.
I believe in dreams, when it turns into a nightmare and you start to scream.
I believe to live your life to the fullest.
I believe to always put things in a positive way.
I believe that you should always stay strong.
I believe that I came here, for a purpose.
I believe that god, put me in this world to spread his love, to others who don't believe in him.
I believe that violence will never end.
I believe that a lot of people pretend.
I believe that people should believe in themselves.
I believe that everygirl should be a princess.
I believe that nobody should feel pain, and try to forget the bloodstains.
I believe that you should always put a smile on your face.
I believe that you should always keep your head up.
I believe that you should never give up on your dream.
I believe that you should always be who you want to be.
I believe that you should never let anyone bring you down, so turn that frown upside down!
I believe in art.
I believe that everybody should have a sweetheart.
I believe that bestfriends are forever.
I believe that people die whenever.
I believe in me, myself and I
I believe no matter what happens to me, I'm going to be fine; even when the deadline is almost here.
I believe that I'm going to survive.
PEACE.

Assignment 1 description
Hi everyone,
I'm including the assignment in the blog, to make sure you're clear what your job is. Feel free to include any relevant photos or links with your posts. Have fun blogging!
Assignment (from Alison):
Pick one of these to do for your journal assignment. Remember, this is equal to one day of attendance!!
Option 1: Reflecting on Assata Shakur's poem we read in class, write a poem beginning with the words "I believe..." Write a 6 stanza poem about what you believe in. Think about issues that are effecting you, your family, and your community. The poem must be 6 stanzas.
Affirmation by Assata Shakur
i believe in living.
i believe in the spectrum of Beta days and Gamma people.
i believe in sunshine.
In windmills and waterfalls,
tricycles and rocking chairs;
And i believe that seeds grow into sprouts.
And sprouts grow into trees.
i believe in the magic of the hands.
And in the wisdom of the eyes.
i believe in rain and tears.
And in the blood of infinity.
i believe in life.
And i have seen the death parade
march through the torso of the earth,
sculpting mud bodies in its path
i have seen the destruction of the daylight and
seen bloodthirsty maggots
prayed to and saluted
i have seen the kind become the blind
and the blind become the bind in one easy lesson.
i have walked on cut grass.
i have eaten crow and blunder bread
and breathed the stench of indifference
i have been locked by the lawless.
Handcuffed by the haters.
Gagged by the greedy.
And, if i know anything at all,
it’s that a wall is just a wall
and nothing more at all.
It can be broken down.
i believe in living i believe in birth.
i believe in the sweat of love and in the fire of truth.
And i believe that a lost ship,
steered by tired, seasick sailors,
can still be guided home to port.
Option 2: Chicago is a vast city with many different neighborhoods and full of many people of many different cultures, backgrounds, ethnicities, gender identities, etc. Many of you at Schurz come from different neighborhoods. Write a paragraph about where you come from. What neighborhood do you live in? Has your family lived there since you were born, or have you moved? Did your parents live in Chicago, or did they come from a different city or country? If your parents are immigrants, what traditions do you keep from your country of origin (certain meals, going to church, etc.)? If you are a Chicago native, ask your parent or guardian how Chicago has changed over the years. This assignment must be two paragraphs long, and thorough. A paragraph is AT LEAST 5 sentences and has a clear beginning and end.

I believe...
i believe in faith.
i believe laughing is the key to happiness.
i believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong.
i believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.
i believe that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.
i believe that tomorrow is another day.
i believe in miracles.
i believe that everything happens for a reason,
the past is the past and it cannot be undone,
And that those who are meant to be in your life,
will find a way to be put there.
i believe in beauty.
And that every girl in the world is beautiful;
No matter what anyone says;
They are beautiful, both inside and out,
don't let anyone tell you otherwise
cause those who do are just hating on your beauty.
i believe in love at first sight.
i believe that revenge isnt right.
i believe that first impressions last
And there is nothing better than a good laugh.
i believe in love.
i believe in fairytales.
i belive in happily ever after.
i believe that you should always leave loved ones
with loving words, it may be the last time you ever see them.
i believe we write our own stories.
i believe that just because two people argue,
it doesn't mean they don't love each other.
And just because they don't argue,
it doesn't mean they do love each other.
i believe in life.
i believe in death.
i believe that as long as you believe in yourself,
Anything is possible.
i believe in life after death
And standing up to a life of mess.
But most of all, i believe in turning to God
When life takes a turn for the worst.
